Parents have rules for their young children, like “Don’t drink what’s under the cabinet,” “Don’t play in the street,” “Don’t walk out from behind parked cars,” etc. God’s direction is not meant to limit us, but to keep us safe. His commands, both the good ones and the bad ones, are for our safety and growth. Through them, we find life and keep it going. (The Old Testament Law had a lot of rules about cleanliness that made no sense at all until we learned about bacteria and viruses, thousands of years after they were written. God’s command kept the Israelites safe all these years, even though they didn’t really understand why God had given them laws in the first place.

Prayer
Lord Jesus, please help me to understand that your words are life. I am aware that you have given me your commands and your will for holiness in order to bless and guard me. Make my heart less obstinate and my life more closely aligned with your will by means of your Spirit. In Jesus’s precious name I pray. Amen.
