Finding the right things to be passionate about may be one of the most important things we can do to grow in spiritual maturity. We can get worked up about things that don’t really matter. We can be crazy about anything, from sports to chocolate pie. But zeal, or a strong feeling about something, needs to be rooted in spiritual wisdom and understanding. We can get so worked up about something that we miss the Lord’s will because we can’t see past our own feelings. I want passionate people around me, but I want them to be passionate about God and the Kingdom.

Prayer

Powerful and perfect God, I find it so simple to become “all worked up” about something only to lose my enthusiasm for it the next day or to become so roused to action that I act rashly and cause terrible harm. Please, Father, grant me the discernment to know what is best, right, and true. In the name of the Holy God, I want to serve, respect, and bless others. In Jesus’s precious name I pray. Amen.
