But he saith unto them, It is I; be not afraid. — John 6:20

Jesus comes to his disciples during a storm on the sea, which was their worst nightmare. He tells them directly, “I Am, don’t be afraid.” There are two important things to notice here. First, Jesus calls himself “I Am,” which is the same name that God used to save Moses and the Israelites from Egypt. Second, he says something that the Bible says surprisingly often: “Don’t be afraid.” When we are willing to let Jesus into our lives in the middle of storms and messes, he not only says, “I Am, don’t be afraid!” but also helps us find our way to our most important destination, ultimate deliverance.

Prayer

O God, the great I Am, you delivered Israel from slavery in Egypt, you gave David impressive victories, and you brought Jesus back to life. I have faith that you can protect me from whatever lies ahead. If I don’t act with the boldness that this kind of faith demands, kindly pardon me and give me the strength to more firmly believe in your presence. In Jesus’s precious name I pray. Amen.
