Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart. — Psalm 37:4

Don’t think that this promise means that God will give us everything we want. Notice the first strong phrase that qualifies this promise: “Delight yourself in the LORD.” As my heart enjoys the Lord and his will and goals, I see a wonderful truth at work: he gives me what I want. When I want what the LORD wants, he likes to give me what my heart wants. This prayer comes from an old hymn: “Sweet will of God, still fold me closer, until I am completely lost in you.” When I lose myself in God’s will and my heart is happy to honor him, God moves quickly to give us what we want and give me more of himself.

Prayer

Holy LORD, God of our ancestors and great giver of all good things, I thank you that you want to bless me and give me a lot of your grace. Please move my heart so that I want to do what you want and then have the courage to ask you to do it for your glory. In Jesus’ precious name I pray. Amen.
