One of the most important ideas in the Old Testament is “fear of the LORD.” The phrase is especially hard to translate, especially since the Bible says over and over again, “Do not be afraid,” and John says, “Perfect love drives out all fear.” It means more than just “respect God.” “Fear of the LORD” means, in general, that we know our place in the world. We know that our holy Father in heaven loves us very much. We know that we are weak and sinful, and that only God’s mercy and grace can save us. We know that his majesty and holiness are much greater than us and that we are not as important as God. We come to God knowing that we need him and that we don’t deserve anything from him. The amazing truth is that when we come to God with awe and deep respect, he welcomes us with open arms and brings us closer. (cf. Isaiah 57:15)

Prayer
Thank you for your mercy, grace, and forgiveness, Holy and Righteous Father, God Almighty. Thank you for being loving, loyal, and fair. I come to you on my knees because I know you are holy, majestic, powerful, and always righteous. Without your grace and the gift of your Spirit, I’m sure I wouldn’t be so brave to come into your presence. Righteous Father, please forgive me for my sins and give me the strength to be honest and kind. In Jesus’ precious name I pray. Amen.
